Has it really been a year since we posted our ‘year in review’ for 2016 and ‘a look forward’ to 2017 post?!?!? Seems like just yesterday . . . .
We were VERY busy in 2017. Here are some of the highlights:
- We spent most of summer and fall popping up at the Villages Bier & Weingarten in West Village . . . and we will be back from May to October this year with great beer, wine, music, food, art, and BRUNCH! Hope to see you there this year!
- We partnered a number of times for events with the folk's at Social Sushi for our signature Sip & Sushi event: 3 hours of sushi making class + wine pairings, uh yum . . .
- We also partnered with the folks at The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe for their EAT series by hosting a Wine 101 class and providing wine pairings for a Holiday Cooking Class . . .
- We partnered again with our friend, “Michigan Bubble Master” Larry Mawby from L. Mawby Vineyards on a couple of occasions!
- We had some amazing eats with our pal and celebrity Chef Maxcel Hardy from River Bistro in the neighborhoods of Grandmont Rosedale
- We won $10,000 to open our wine bar at the Dolphin Tank business pitch contest powered by the Michigan Women’s Foundation!
- We launched a lot of fun events this year, including our Spanish Wine Tasting (bilingual tasting in SW Detroit) and our Walking Wine Bar Tour in Downtown (which will all likely be back on the events page this year…)
Coming up this year:
- We will be teaming with Social Sushi and The War Memorial again for our Sip & Sushi event in March 2018
- We will be hosting some fun wine & yoga events
- You can now find us at the Villages Bier & Weingarten which has become a seasonal pop-up for us. We are there every weekend from May - October!
- Be prepared to hear news from us about our new Wine Bar. Things are moving pretty quickly towards us opening up late 2018/early 2019, stay tuned :)

Wine Trends for 2018
Last year we prognosticated into the future with some trends of the wine world that would dominate 2017.
So, for 2018 --
Pink, Pink, Pink!
Rosé wine accounts for only about 1.5% of the U.S. table wine market. But, sales of the pink stuff grew by 53% from August 2016 to August 2017 in the United States. More people are drinking pink and more people are drinking pink year round rather than just in the summer months. You should too! Rosé wine is versatile and affordable, easily paired with almost all meals. They range from the very light and elegant styles of Provence in France that work well with light salads, fish, and chicken to the full-bodied styles of rosé from Italy, Spain and Chinon in France that can pair with heartier dishes of lamb, pork and some beef. Pink bubbles are also a true delight! Bubbles pair with everything and the added fruitiness of most rosé bubbles add a delightful complexity to your meal. You really cannot go wrong with bringing rosé to your table in 2018. Most of the 2017 vintage offerings will hit the Michigan Market in late March into April so resolve to try more pink wine this year!
Big is better!
Magnum sales are on the rise! A magnum of wine is a 1.5-litre bottle of wine, or two bottles of wine in one! Sales of these unique offerings were up 378% in 2017. Why should you consider magnums? Usually, your cost is a bit cheaper than buying two bottles. Also, wine in larger format bottles takes longer to reach optimum drinking age. This adds intensity to red wines and allows those of us who cellar wines to keep them longer. And lastly, they are great centerpieces for dinners, weddings or almost any other celebrations! The caveat for buyers is that not all producers sell these large format bottles (although with an increase in sales, more may start to). So, if your local wine shop does not have one of your favorite wines in magnum format, ask your retailer to check for you. There is nothing like walking into a dinner with friends or family with a magnum of wine with you. And just in case you were wondering, magnums are just the start . . . some producers go crazy with 3-litre bottles (a double magnum containing four regular wine bottles of juice) and even 5-liter bottles for those huge parties.
The wines of Southwest France
Wine Enthusiast named this region as the Region of the Year this past October. Why? The region is lush and hilly with a temperate oceanic climate that allows producers to produce wines with great balance and finesse. The region hosts 120 different grape varieties including Malbec, Tannat, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng. Subregions to seek out in Michigan stores would be Cote du Gascogne (Gascony) for whites and Gaillac, Madiran, and Cahors for reds.
We have in the past couple years featured some of the wines from the region including the wines of Domaine de Pellehaut in Gascogny and Alain Brumont in Gascogny and Madiran. We will continue to feature this region into 2018 because not only are these offerings of great quality, they also still come at super values.
Yep, wine in a box. It’s here and while not all of it is great, the quality levels are getting a lot better. The wine that comes from the box will never “blow your mind” but for an everyday option, it can’t be beaten. The wine comes in a “bladder” within the box. This allows consumers to pour from the same box for about three weeks. White and rosé wines are generally the better options for boxed wines in our opinion. They also come at a great value -- three bottles in a box for about the price of two in most case. So, if you drink wine with a lot of meals, grab a box of wine, put it in the fridge and enjoy for weeks at a time!
